.Department - NAUTICAL SCIENCE ( or Maritime Science)

profile for WEB posting:-

Nautical Science (Maritime Science)  Department is currently running one under-graduate Programme approved by the Director General Of Shipping, India and a two-year Higher National Diploma Programme in collaboration with Glasgow and South Tyneside Colleges in UK and one Post Graduate Programme.

The undergraduate Programme “BSc-Nautical Science” is a three-year fully residential Programme with the primary objective of providing aspirants a lucrative career as Officers in the Merchant Ships. The career ladder runs as follows:- a) Three-year degree Programme b) 12 months as on-board cadets c) Viva-Voce examination by the Ministry of Shipping under the aegis of Director General of Shipping, clearing which the aspirant is issued with a “Competency Certificate” licensing him to work as a full-fledged third and second Officer on board merchant vessels d) after putting in requisite sea-service as 3rd/2nd Officer and clearing the Chief Mate examination makes one eligible to work as a Chief Officer at Management Level and e) After similar sea-service as 3rd/2nd/Chief Officer and passing the Master’s Examination makes one eligible to rise to the highest rank on board, that as a Master. Typically the required time span to rise to the level of Master after graduation will be around 8 years.

As compared to the one-year Pre-sea Diploma Programmes run elsewhere in the country the 3-year Programme offers certain distinct advantages:-

  • provides them with a Degree for pursuing Post Graduate Studies in related streams.
  • Reduced Sea-time as a sailing cadet , viz only 12 months.
  • Exemption from the Written Examination after completion of sea-time for the first stage Officer qualification.
  • the Programme not only prepares the students for the first two stages of their career- viz on-board cadet and Navigating Officer- but the curriculum also provides them with sound knowledge base for the next two levels of examination.
  • The Programme is unique in the sense that the training provided is holistic and is honed to develop the student into not only a thinker but a well-rounded DOER as well. Leadership qualities, Officer-like decorum etcetra are in built into the training schedule. The following extract from the DG Shipping aptly amplifies this special aspect of the Programme:-

Candidates for pre-sea training come from varying social, cultural, geographical, linguistic and economic backgrounds. On completion of the Programme they are required to be able to man the ships effectively and to have the knowledge, maturity and balance that enable them to react competently and resourcefully in an emergency. They should also know the manner of working and of behaving in their respective work-stations, accommodation, recreation rooms, dining halls and in all formal and informal contexts on board the ship and elsewhere. With this in mind, the Programme of training in India is compulsorily residential with workshop training, boatwork, computer operation, team games, swimming, physical training, parade and a host of other extra-curricular activities. Students successfully completing this Programme should have the required standard of knowledge, communication skills, competence, cheerful obedience to orders of superiors, team spirit, leadership and other seaman-like qualities. The objective is to provide a Programme that balances the requirements of university-type graduate education with the technical expertise necessary for the safe and efficient operation of merchant ships.

The 2-year HND- Nautical Science Programme is run in collaboration with Glasgow College and SouthTyneside Colleges of UK. On completion of the first year at AMET and clearing the Integrated Learning assessment, the student should pursue the second year at the respective colleges in the UK. After clearing the final examinations the candidates will be issued with a Diploma Certificate. After serving on board as sailing cadets for about two years they can appear for the first-stage competency Examination conducted presently by the UK Maritime Safety Agency , passing of which will make them eligible to serve as 3rd/2nd Officer on board merchant ships. Thereafter the career graph follows a similar pattern to that of the 3-year degree Programme aforesaid.

The 2-year Post Graduate Programme available at this University is “MSc-Fleet Operations Management”. It is one of a kind in India and was developed with the special objective of imparting a systemized curriculum for those who work on the higher-end of the shore-side of Shipping Companies, Ship Management companies and the like. The regular Management Programmes offered elsewhere focus primarily on the Management domain only and do not cover the intricacies of shipboard operations. Experienced Masters and Chief Engineers migrating to the shore-side of Shipping filled in the gap and were able to assimilate the Management techniques due to their experience coming with age, but this is necessarily a slow process. To bridge this lacuna the curriculum for this Programme has been specially developed keeping in mind that efficient and harmonised Management of Ships requires not only sound Management Techniques but a proper appreciation of the day-to-day ship operations at sea as well. Hitherto there was no Programme in India offering a balance between these two streams. The subjects offered cover adequately the legal, technical, commercial and personnel Management and operation of Ships at the corporate level.
