What is counseling?

Counseling is:

• Counseling is a type of talking therapy that allows you to talk about your problems and feelings in a confidential and dependable environment.
• The act of helping the client to see things more clearly, possibly from a different view-point. This can enable the client to focus on feelings, experiences or behaviour, with a goal to facilitating positive change.
• A relationship of trust.

Counseling is NOT:
1. Judgemental.
2. Giving advice, making suggestions and recommendations.
3. Influencing the client’s values, attitudes, beliefs, interests, decisions etc, with or without any threat or admonition.
4. Interviewing clients.
5. Getting emotionally involved with the client.

How Counseling can help?

Counseling can help you:

• Deal with issues preventing you achieving your ambitions
• Understand yourself and your problems better
• Feel more confident
• Cope with work-related stress
• Deal with feelings of depression or sadness, and have a more positive outlook on life
• Deal with feelings of anxiety, helping you worry less about things
• Cope with a bereavement or relationship breakdown
• Develop a better understanding of other people's points of view

What to expect from counseling?

During your Counseling sessions, you'll be encouraged to express your feelings and emotions. By discussing your concerns with you, the Counselor can help you gain a better understanding of your feelings and thought processes, as well as identifying ways of finding your own solutions to problems.
It can be a great relief to share your worries and fears with someone who acknowledges your feelings and is able to help you reach a positive solution.
You may be offered Counseling as a single session, as a short course of sessions over a few weeks or months.

Counselor – Counselee Relationship:

The Counselor – Counselee relationship is not casual, matter of fact and business-like but that it is characterized by warmth, responsiveness and understanding.

The Role of the Counselor

The role of the Counselor is to enable the client to explore many aspects of their life and feelings, by talking openly and freely. Talking in such a way it is rarely possible with family or friends, who are likely to be emotionally involved and have opinions and biases that may be detrimental to the success of the Counseling. The Counselor gives the client an opportunity to express difficult feelings such as anger, resentment, guilt and fear in a confidential environment. Counseling reduces confusion, allowing you to make effective decisions leading to positive changes in your attitude and/or behaviour. Counseling is not advice - giving. The ultimate aim of Counseling is to enable you to make your own choices, reach your own decisions and to act upon them accordingly.

Confidentiality:

• The center makes appropriate referrals when professional assistance can no longer be fruitful.
• Protects the confidentiality and releases personal data only according to prescribed laws or institute polices. The information shared and records maintained are kept safe and confidential, unless such disclosure is necessary to protect you or another person.
