IN DEVELOPING NIGERIAN
MARINE HUMAN CAPACITY
–
DIRECTOR GENERAL,
NIGERIAN MARITIME
ADMINISTRATION AND
SAFETY AGENCY
Ishiaku
Shekarau, Executive
Director of Nigerian
Maritime Administration
and Safety Agency
(NIMASA), was on
a visit to Amet
University, to grace
the occasion of
the passing out
ceremony of the
5th batch of BE
Marine Engineering
and B.Sc Nautical
Science cadets.
Addressing the gathering
on behalf of Mr.Temisan
Omatseye, Director
General of NIMASA,
he said considering
the huge manpower
demand for seafarers
at the international
arena, NIMASA has
launched Nigerian
Seafarers Development
Programme (NSDP)
to train pool of
seafarers to satisfy
the meet the demand
supply chain. 45000
seafarers would
be required to crew
over 10000 vessels
that are expected
to join the global
merchant fleet in
next three years,
he said. In actualization
of this programme,
he hoped to partner
with Amet University,
taking advantage
of the robust faulty
and facilities available
at the campus. Recalling
the political support
both the countries
exchange so far,
he mentioned that
there is no doubt
that the tie with
the university will
even more strengthen
the relationship
between the countries.
Congratulating
Amet for the efforts
it has taken to
disseminate the
knowledge on marine
education, Mr. B
N Prasad, Managing
Director, Bernhard
Schulte Ship Management(

said, that more
awareness has to
be made on this
fast growing sector,
that is expected
to have more of
finance allocation
in the future. As
the returns are
tremendous, quality
seafarers should
dedicate their service
for the development
of the country,
he added. Though
world trade depends
90 percent on merchant
navy ships, India
mans only 8 percent
which needs to be
addressed at the
policy level, he
suggested.
