An Awareness Programme on "Global Warming" at AMET University

An awareness programme on "Global Warming" was organized at AMET University and conducted on 11-12-08 at the university premises. "Global Warming" is a threatening the world as temperatures of atmosphere and water bodies continues to rise. The consequences of global warming are manifold and the very existence of life is at stake. In this context world nations are working out ways and means to check the global warming. If people are aware of the perils of global warming, there is a hope to cool the earth. Under these circumstances, an awareness programme on global warming was conceived to motivate the student community and to take the message to the people so as to make them understand the problems of global warming.

As part of the awareness programme oratorical, essay writing, slogan coining and painting competitions for students were conducted by Department of English, focusing the perils of global warming and pollution. Captain. S. Bhardwaj, Vice-Chancellor of the University, in his presidential address underlined the consequences of the shipwrecking, oil seepage and marine pollution. Mr. S. Karikalan, Joint Pro Chancellor, who delivered the felicitation address requested the audience to conserve electrical energy at least for few hours in day. A souvenir brought out to mark the occasion, was released by the Vice Chancellor, the first copy of it was received by Rtn. K.S. Jayaraman, Rotary District Green initiative Chairman, Dr. E.K.T. Siva Kumar, Senator, Exnora and Advisor ESRO also received the copy of the souvenir and Dr. M.B. Nirmal, founder Exnora International delivered the keynote address. In his address he requested the audience to adapt with the global warming because it couldn't be contained in the light of human activities.

He appealed to the students to maintain at least half a kilometer on either side of the University campus as litter free zone. Rtn. Sudha Umashankar, Chairman, Rotary District special initiative new horizons, gave useful tips for conserving energy in domestic life. Later, saplings were planted on the university campus.

Prof. Dr. V. Balasubramanian organizing secretary of the awareness programme on global warming welcomed the gathering. Prizes were distributed by the Vice chancellor and Dr. Nirmal the Chief Guest, to the winners of various competitions. The function came to an end with the vole of thanks proposed by Prof. Dr. A. Jaffar Hussain, Special Officer of the university. Captain K. Rajesh compered the entire proceeding of the meeting.
