Academy of Maritime Education and Training, Chennai established in 1993 is a market leader in providing value based Maritime Education and Training in the country. Over 2000 seafarers trained in AMET are now holding senior positions in leading Shipping Companies worldwide.

Assessing and responding to the needs and expectations of the seafaring community today, AMET in association with Tamil Nadu Open University (TNOU) has designed a new MBA programme with focus on Shipping & Logistics Management through distance learning made for seafarers. The eligibility requirements are:

  • Master Mariners Licence (or)
  • 1st Class Marine Engineers Licence (or)
  • Graduate from a recognized University

The launching of this course was held at GRT Convention Centre, Chennai on 20th September 2006 and the programme was launched through the graceful hands of Chairman of FOSMA Capt.R.Y.Barve who specially flew to Chennai for this occasion. The solemn function was very well attended by the seafaring community of Chennai and many prospectus were sold out same day. The course fee is reasonably priced at Rs.30,000/- per annum for the 2 year course and there will be 2 intakes per annum, one in January and one in June each year. Elaborating on the course, the Dean of Management studies Mr.N.Srinivasan who is himself an alumnus of IIM (Ahmedabad) and with 18 years of industry experience in India and abroad in Commercial Shipping & Logistics, outlined the objectives of the programme thus –

  • To equip the students with adequate skills and knowledge in General Management functional areas and in the Shipping & Logistics business sectors.
  • To help the participants meet their personal expectations by providing an industry specific content which helps them to gain a thorough understanding of the maritime business.
  • To provide opportunities for undertaking employment oriented projects, which will facilitate a career change option to the seafarers.

He continued “The programme adopts a holistic view of shipping, integrating various aspects viz. Ship Management, Liner Shipping, Ship Agency Management, Port & Terminal Management, Maritime Law, Maritime Economics, Freight Forwarding, Logistics and Supply Chain Management through which graduates will develop a complete understanding of the opportunities of this sector”.

The MoU between AMET and TNOU was signed by the Registrar of TNOU and Capt.S.Bhardwaj, CEO & Director of AMET. The function was presided over by Dr.Prof.Palanichamy, Vice Chancellor of TNOU. Mr.J.Ramachandran, Chairman of AMET welcomed the gathering and marked the occasion as yet another step forward in the growth of AMET. The Guest of Honour Mr.Swapan Das Sarma, Director E-learning at Teledata Marine Systems, USA and Advisor to the Governing Council of AMETIAP a highly respected educationist in the Maritime sector worldwide, congratulated AMET on the launch of this programme and wished them well. He elaborated his experience in India on the development of E-learning and remarked that he had full conviction that Chennai will emerge as the hub and leader of Maritime Education in the country.
