Sunday,
29th July 2007, was abuzz with activity
and favour as AMET prepared to pass
out its 14th batch of HND-UK cadets.
The Chief Guest was to be Dr.Murugesan
Ponnavaikko, Vice Chancellor of
Bharathidasan University, Thiruchirappalli,
an illustrious and eminent educationist.
The
Guest of Honour was to be Capt.Satya
Sahoo, General Manager of Ishima
Pte Ltd, Mumbai which has placed
31 cadets of this batch in the first
year itself.
What
made the day so special, was it
marking of yet another collaboration
of AMET, this time with South Tyneside
College of UK as well, besides the
successful 14 years partnership
with Glasgow College of Nautical
Studies. Proud parents of passing
out cadets waited anxiously as the
clock ticked 5 in the evening and
the Chief Guest's car rolled in
to the ceremonial beats of the AMET
band. The Chief Guest and Guest
of Honour witnessed an impressive
Guard of Honour before lighting
the sacred lamp and taking their
positions on the dias.
Chairman
Shri J.Ramachandran welcomed the
gathering and recounted his long
association with Dr.Ponnavaikko
and thanked him for all his support
to AMET. He also appraised everybody
of his fruitful associations with
Mr.J.C.Das Managing Director and
Capt.J.P.D'Mello, Director,Fleet
Personnel of Ishima Pte Ltd, Singapore.
Capt.S.Bhardwaj,
CEO & Director in his Passing Out
address, urged the cadets to maintain
the good name of AMET at the UK
colleges and let not the fact of
placement slacken their efforts
in UK colleges. He then administered
the "Oath of Honour" to the passing
out cadets.
Chief Guest Dr.M.Ponnavaikko delivered
a very inspiring address to the
young cadets, recounting his and
Mr.Ramachandran's humble beginning
at a small village in Tamil Nadu
and the phenomenal rise both of
them had achieved. He urged the
cadets to take pride in their profession
and never shy away from responsibilities.
Guest
of Honour Capt.Satya Sahoo, General
Manager, Ishima Pte Ltd expressed
his thanks to AMET for inviting
him. He emphasized on the role of
Indian Seafarers in the world maritime
scenario. He also mentioned about
the phenomenal growth of Ishima
in last two years and thanked the
seafarers sailing with Ishima for
achieving it. His address to AMET
cadets to prove their mantle and
to be a "Quality Seafarer" was inspiring
and thought provoking.
Capt.Satya
Sahoo, then distributed the passing
out certificates and also the letters
of selection to the cadets. After
the close of the function, Capt.Satya
Sahoo interacted on a personal basis
with the cadets placed with Ishima
and their parents.
The
Gold Medals for high achievers were
presented as follows:
AMET
had since inception, instituted
Gold Medals to honour the high performers
in the field of ACADEMICS as well
as General Proficiency. Both of
which are very essential in the
making of a well turned out Merchant
Marine Officer.
Since
South Tyneside College was a new
stream commencing this year, it
was thought fit to have separate
awards for this stream as well.
